The big red apple, the first thing that comes to mind is New York city, all its high rises, subways, bright yellow taxis dodging in and out of traffic and numerous of people everywhere going somewhere. The underground subway to Queens or catch a ferry to Long Island and Ellis island, where stand the tall green statue of liberty that welcome immigrants and tourist from all over the world. There is the famous Broadway musicals, plays and Good Morning America. Live the all American dream and sing the song, lets us all go to the ball game, while sitting in the seats of a Yankee baseball game at Yankee stadium, eating an original hoagie sandwich or their famous hotdogs and peanuts. There is plenty to do in the big red apple, but this is not what this story is all about.
This story begins in the year 1960, where Annie, an little African American girl is sitting on the floor of a laundry mat, while her parents do laundry in Dallas Texas. Sitting with her is her best friend Susan and Annie and Susan is chatting up a storm. Now Susan was very special to Annie and Susan would go everywhere with Annie. Susan would attend all the special tea parties and watch patiently, while Annie and her mom bake cookies after school. Annie would tell Susan all her secrets and especially the one about her fear on walking. Annie was two and half years old at the time and her parents worried, because Annie had not start walking. Annie was taken to many doctor appointments and they all said the same thing, only Annie knows when she will begin to walk. Her parents was frustrated and thought the doctors was speaking foolish, how does a two and a half years old would know when to walk? The doctors saw the dismay on Annie parents face and explained further that Annie is just a child, but this child is waiting for something special and then she will begin to walk. Annie parents love her very much and Annie was very special, she knew that her parents wanted her to walk and she saw the sadness in their eyes and understood what that meant. Annie is not the same as the other children, she had an speech impediment and on top of that, they learned during the doctors visits, Annie was born with a small hole in her heart as well. One thing for sure, Annie had a smile that would light up the world, which by the way, image that of her best friend Susan. If they were born of the same nature and had the same color of eyes, you would think that Annie and Susan was twins.
About Annie best friend Susan, all little girls around Annie age had a best friend name Susan, for Susan was a Susan maker doll. She was white, blue eyes, woolly straight curly hair and if you pull this string tuck away on her back, she cry, talk and did all sorts of things that little girls do. Susan had very beautiful clothes, hats and shoes. Just like Annie, Susan too had Christmas presents under the tree, with new things to wear. Annie even made Susan a little bracelet from her new jewelry maker set. What a beautiful combination, a Susan maker doll and a jewelry maker set! Susan was a fun friend to have, to tell all your secrets too and always there when you really needed someone to talk to and play with. However, little did both Annie and Susan knew, when the day that Annie begins to walk, will be the day that Susan would lose her best friend.
to be continued.....
